Seasonal Depression
A Shamanic View
By Gwilda Wiyaka

As we enter the holiday season, many of us are finding the "Scrooge affect" is in full swing. Psychologically we can view it as bringing back old wounds and disappointments from our family of origin. This is probably a large contributor but by no means the entire story.

In my year as a shamanic practitioner I have come to discover there are many facets to this cyclical phenomenon.

There is the physical aspect, our bodies are slowing down to conserve during the cold season (a leftover from our hunter gather origins). The emotional one is mentioned above. Mentally we are adding up our credit card debt and putting it up against the gifts we still "need" to buy. Spiritually, we have soul loss from the trauma that occurred when we discovered we were lied to about a jolly fat man and a chimney by our formerly trusted parents.

All joking aside, in this shamanicly deprived culture, this time of year is a great opportunity to track down soul loss that is triggered by the holidays. Much relief can be obtained by mending our fragmentation through soul retrieval.

Sometimes, however, the holiday blues seem to persist even after we have addressed all the above. What then, is the missing link?

We are not honoring our natural rhythms. Like it or not, we are still part of this Earth, no matter how much concrete, asphalt and consumerism we place between us and her. The Earth has her seasons each with a different energy that we humans no longer align with.

This is the season of Samhain in the Celtic tradition, a time of inward turning. As the cold sets in and snow falls, it is a time to let go of the past ambitions and frantic activity of the harvest. Conserve and give gratitude what we have gathered. Sit quietly in front of the fire processing the past year, share stories of the ancestors and contemplate spiritual matters.

Instead, we are madly shoveling snow off our cars in the wee hours of the morning while it is still dark, braving road rage and ice to a job that by no means honors our "natural rhythms". After a day under artificial light, computer screens and high stress, we hit the mall on our way home to battle the rest of the scrooges and bag more stuff our loved ones don't need and we can't afford.

In short, our entire life style is pushing against the natural flow of the river of life and the river is winning.

The challenge is to live in our artificial world, make a living and still, to the best of our abilities, honor the natural flow of life.

This year, my dear friends, I have a Christmas wish for you. More time in front of your fire with those you love, good books that inspire and great stories of the heroes in your ancestry to inspire your descendants. I wish for you, the peace that deep gratitude for all that we have brings. Most of all, may you find yourself reentering the calm eddies of the river of life.

In Friendship,
Gwilda Wiyaka

Movies:

A great portrayal of soul loss and the resulting reoccurring patterns in life is to be found in the movie "Ray".

This movie, ten years in the making, is the life story of the late Stevie Ray. It delves deeply into his life of pain, addiction and sheer will power as he overcomes and excels in the face of great damage.

Clinic News:

In addition to graciously greeting our clients, she is running the V.I.B.E. and transcribing Gwilda's lectures and classes for her books. Welcome Catherine!

Music:

"One People One Nation"
Ancient and Modern Shamanic Songs
By Gwilda Wiyaka

This charming and inspiring CD was originally intended to teach the old songs to students of Path Home Shamanic Arts School's Drum Circle Leadership Program while still honoring the oral traditions.

Fully expecting to cut it in a weekend or two, Gwilda Wiyaka and her producer Dan Polizzi entered Dan's sound studio. Two years and many artistic epiphanies later, One People was the result.

This CD can be viewed and ordered on line http://findyourpathhome.com/mg_cd.html or purchased at Longmont, Boulder, and Greeley Borders Bookstores.
