The Fomorians
November 2005
by Gwilda Wiyaka

Some ordinary-reality history:

In Irish-Celtic mythology, the Fomorians are a race of demonic giants, ancient occupants of Ireland (or sometimes mentioned as a mythical, prehistoric people who raided and pillaged Ireland from the sea). The first to invade Ireland were the Partholons, but after many battles the Fomorians afflicted them all with plague. After them came the Nemeds, who in their very first battle were defeated and enslaved. The third wave of invaders, the Firbolgs, were more successful and they subdued the Fomorians and managed to live peacefully with them.

After a period of peace, the Tuatha Dé Danann, the Irish race of gods, arrived. They conquered the Firbolgs, but dealt more subtly with the Fomorians, although they destroyed their hegemony over Ireland for good in the second battle of Mag Tuireadh. The Fomorians were given the province of Connacht, and were even allowed to marry some of the Tuatha Dé. The king of the Fomorians is the one-eyed Balor. Other prominent members are: Bres, Eriu, and Tethra. The Fomorians are sometimes mythologically associated with the powers of nature which challenge man: fog, storm, winter, disease, crop- blight. They are also associated with the forces of Chaos. The name comes from fomó, "giant", "pirate".

From a non-ordinary reality perspective: What are evil Fomorians?

As mentioned above, the Fomorians are powers of nature gone awry and forces of chaos that challenge our well being. So what are the evil Fomorians made of, they’re made of our denial, they’re made of our fear, they’re made of negative inundations and thought forms that we’ve not been responsible for, they are our half formed Frankensteins from intended manifestations that have not been cultivated and brought into being nor have they been dismantled and our creative essence freed to form something new.

There is nothing here that we haven’t created. However, we’ve denied so much as a culture and feared so much of our denials as a people that we have created our denials and our fears. These fears and denials are part of what creates the “evil” Fomorians. Evil meaning not of nature, not natural, out of its place, ghosts and goblins and things that go bump in the night.

Fomorians and “The Wild Hunt” are taken from the Celtic tradition. It is the shaman’s job to fight the evil Fomorians in the wild hunt each season of Samhain, (November 1, - January 31) to protect his/her people and their way of life. It is during this time, that the veil is thinnest between worlds and the shaman can access and dismantle that which no longer serves us while it is still in spirit before it manifests physically into something not to our liking or benefit.

I would like to credit Tom Cowan for bringing this powerful work to me through his workshop “The Wild Hunt” and encouraging me to pass it on to my students.

It is preferable to do this work as a group because a group of shaman is very, very powerful and can access and move things that an individual shaman cannot. This is because in group power and group energy 1+1=3. Agreement is a very powerful thing and it has taken the agreement of an entire culture (in denial) to create the Fomorian energy in the first place. It is for this reason that the Wild Hunt is a part of the Path Home workshop Manifestation Level 1. We first must dismantle that which no longer serves and free up our creative energies to plant that which we need into our futures. Also, as future and existing shamanic practitioners, we are given an opportunity every Samhain to participate in protecting our people and communities from the effects of the Evil Fomorians.

So this Samhain, know your shamanic practitioners are out working hard for you in non-ordinary reality as they bravely battle the creators of disease, natural disasters, chaos and hardship. Also, in so doing we are praying for abundance and peace and health and good things for all of our people and all of our relations.

Blessings to you,

Gwilda Wiyaka

Journey Questions are designed for individuals that have taken Path Home Shamanic Arts School's Lower or Upper world Journey Class.  These classes are designed to instruct a person on the successful access use and interpretation of the shamanic trance.

Decide on what you would like to manifest in the next year and write it down. Be very specific about calling in all your power before you journey, then ask:

Given my bottom line,

  1. What is currently in my life that no longer serves me and needs to be dismantled in order to move forward and manifest that which I want in the coming year?
  2. How can I dismantle it? (if more than one showed up on question #1, do a journey for each)
  3. What will it look like for me to do so? (what will be the cost, belief systems, friends, etc.)

You may try a separate journey on each choice above for greatest clarity.

Happy Journey!
